Homestead Inn, Greenwich, CT

Just 20 miles from Manhattan, this exclusive enclave is best known for it’s exquisite cuisine by Thomas Henkelmann, a distinguished Les Grandes Tables Du Monde restaurant. Though the facade of the Homestead Inn may appear to be a traditional Victorian Cottage, the interior is probably one of the most fascinating spaces you will see. Decked with touches of European, Balinese and elements from her world travels, Theresa Henkelmann has created an international space that appeals to jet-setters and sophisticates alike.
It is said the difference between real life and the movies is that real life has bad lighting and no score. All of that changes as one enters the grounds of Thomas Henkelmann and Homestead Inn in Greenwich, CT. Purchased in 1997 by Theresa and Thomas Henkelmann as a showcase for Thomas Henkelmann’s incredible cuisine, the existing hotel was a logical extension and a blank canvas for Theresa’s design expertise.
Integrating the architecture that defers to the hotel’s history and individuality, the Henkelmann’s purposeful and sensitive renovation is a salute to the past while resolutely embracing the new and the now. Art and artifacts from around the globe are seamlessly woven into each room and suite’s décor. European in flavor, the hotel speaks to both the artist and the bon vivant. Cement tiles designed and colored by French artist Denis Colomb add tactile appeal to the heated bathroom floors. Each bath differs in style and design and all have sumptuous amenities intended to coddle.

A design thread throughout the hotel is the inspired use of color. Brave and bold, it effortlessly blends the old world with the new. Contemporary artists’ paintings and forged iron and bronze sculpture reminiscent of Garouste and Bonetti characterize the blend. Artisans’ craftworks are called upon to perform their intended function.

Textiles and furniture by Brunswig & Fils, Donghia and solid cherry bespoke furniture by Dana Robes artfully mix with pieces from China, Bali, India and Morocco. Warm and hip, chic and sumptuous; the rooms and suites elegantly avoid being trendy and thematic.

The very personal stamp the Henkelmann’s used to create their luxurious retreat is evident with the attention to detail in even the most unlikely places.
